The Joy of Dogs: Who is training who?

“I’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes … and I am convinced that dogs think humans are nuts.” – John Steinbeck

Dogtober is coming and it's a solid time to reflect on who, really, is training who? Yes we care for and love our dogs, but they also teach us about being present for life (squirrel!), appreciating the small moments, and finding love for ourselves and the world despite it all.

Join Alex and co-teacher Walnut (woof) for four cozy Monday night sessions in October to mindfully reflect on what our dogs teach us. These sessions will feature mindfulness instruction and practices, group sharing with fellow dog lovers, and the stars of the show, dog. You'll leave this series, dog willing, with an appreciation of how your dog can be your guru for living life to its fullest and finding peace and joy amidst it all. Ruff!

Sessions will be at 8-9pm EST on Zoom to allow pups to be in their home environment and for y'all to cozy up together.

And to give back to these pups, 25% of ticket sales will benefit The Little Black Dog Rescue Group, an awesome DC-based rescue group

Dates:

• Monday October 2: "Sit" Being present for life

Tuesday October 10 : "Who's happy to see you?!" Gratitude

• Monday October 16: "Does your dog care who you replied all to?" Self-compassion

• Monday October 23: "Mud puddle, yay!" Joy

“All his life he tried to be a good person. Many times, however, he failed. For after all, he was only human. He wasn’t a dog.” – Charles Schulz

Mindful Taper: Bringing Mindfulness (and Joy) Back to Running (Optional

You look down at your watch and it's only mile two of a long run. Your calf feels a little twingy (did you not stretch, *again*?!). You're tired and out of breath, *already*.. Worse, you're bored and want it to be over. Mm breakfast burrito. But here you are, miles to go and it's your mind that is racing. What do you do?

We run, and some of us run a lot. But we also get bored, frustrated, and doubtful. This class will help you cultivate mindfulness and reconnect you with the beauty of joy of running.

It will include community sharing, a brief mindfulness meditation, and an opportunity to experiment with mindful running. We will practice *actually* paying attention to our bodies, bringing mindfulness to the sometimes unhelpful stories we tell (“Ugh” “I can't do this...”), and considering more helpful stories about gratitude and joy. Running is supposed to be fun, right?

No experience with meditation or mindfulness required.

This class is offered freely and your presence is the most important contribution.

Please consider a $5-$10 donation to https://www.ahmaudarberyfoundation.org/. by sending Venmo to Alex Snider (Venmo @alex-snider) who can coordinate donation.

Juggling for Everyone (yes, you!)

Learning something new in this type-A world can be scary. At the same time finding new ways to use our bodies and let ourselves play, without holding too tightly to the outcome, can be a true joy. And doing it with other fun humans doesn't hurt, either!

So, whether you can juggle flaming swords or you routinely drop an apple, join juggling extraordinaires Brian Segal and Dzhoy (Joy) Zuckerman along with garden host Alex Snider to learn how to juggle and practice letting things go (not at the same time :) )

No juggling experience required and you'll leave with your own set of juggling balls for in between those Zoom meetings!

Forest Bathing - A Mappy Hour Event!

A Mappy Hour Event! Forest Bathing with Alex Snider (and Walnut!) (RSVP Here!)

"To save the forest, we can't just put a fence around it, we have to be the forest." - Joshua Michael Schrei of The Emerald Podcast

Think back to fairy tales. How many of them start with a step into the forest? Chances are you too have wandered into the forest. Perhaps biking, running, hiking. Most likely, you were doing something. What would it be like, instead, to just be in nature and let that be enough?

This is the proposition of forest bathing: to slow down the "doing" enough to experience, in your body, the truth that there is no divide between us and nature. There is only us, humans and nature.

Our bath will involve orientation to the idea of forest bathing, group sharing to connect and inspire each other, time to explore your own relationship with nature, and a comically short "hike." Join us: Alex (and Walnut); other Mappy Hour friends; and the trees, birds, insects, and plants of Rock Creek!

This event is freely offered. And, as a way to show your gratitude for the natural world, if you can afford it please consider a $10-$20 donation to City Wildlife, an awesome non-profit working to protect animals in DC as us humans encroach on their habitat. You can donate using the link below or via Venmo @ alex-snider with the note "forest bathing." https://citywildlife.org/donate/
